A Dance of Fire and Ice: one button, two planets and a path that never goes straight for long
A Dance of Fire and Ice has one control and no mercy about it. A red planet and a blue planet orbit each other over a path of floor tiles. When you press, the planet that is swinging stops on the tile it has reached and becomes the pivot, and the other one starts to swing. Press on the beat and the pair walks down the path. Press early or late and the swinging planet misses the tile, flies off, and the level stops with the percentage you reached.
The whole game is hidden in the shape of the path. A straight line means a steady beat. A right-angle turn means the next press comes after a quarter of a turn instead of half, so it comes sooner. A sharp zig-zag makes the notes come fast, and a wide bend spaces them out. Once you see the path as sheet music, you can read a pattern before the planet gets there.
This is the free web version that fizzd and 7th Beat Games released before the full Steam game: version 0.4.2 from December 2018, with music and code by Hafiz Azman (fizzd), additional code by Giacomo Preciado and art by Kyle Labriola. It is smaller than the paid game and plays a little differently, and it is the version that runs in a browser. It is loaded here from this site.
Controls & mechanics
| Action | Control | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Hit a beat | Any key (Space is easiest) | Every press pins the swinging planet to the next tile. One press per tile, no holding. |
| Walk the title map | Any key, in time | The title screen is a level too: keep pressing on the beat to step towards Continue or World 1, 2 or 3. |
| Adjust timing | [ and ] | Shifts the calibration offset a little earlier or later without redoing the test. |
| Re-calibrate | C | Opens the Device Calibration screen again — do this after changing headphones or speakers. |
| Restart | Any key after a fall | The run ends on a miss; the next press starts the level again. |
| Reset progress | Hold R on the title screen | Erases the saved highest level and world stats. Hold it on purpose only. |
| Language | Tab | Switches the text to Chinese (translation by craft) and back. |
How to get further in A Dance of Fire and Ice
- Pass the calibration properly: The game measures how early or late your presses land compared with the sound, and moves every level by that offset. If you rushed the test, press C and do it again with the sound on and your eyes closed.
- Listen, then look: The tiles tell you when; the music tells you how. Count the beat out loud through the first bar, then let the path confirm what you already hear.
- Read angles as time: A straight tile is a half turn of the orbit. A 90° corner is a quarter turn, so the press comes twice as soon. The tighter the corner, the faster the next note.
- Watch the icons on the floor: A snail tile slows the orbit down and a rabbit speeds it up (two snails or two rabbits change it more). A swirl reverses the spin. All three change the next beat, so notice them early.
- Tap, don’t press: Short, even taps give steadier timing than full key presses. Many players use two keys and alternate hands on fast runs.
- Fix the offset, not your hands: If you keep missing late on every tile, it is usually the calibration, not you. Nudge it with [ or ] a step at a time and try again.
Key features
- One button: Every level is played with a single key. Only the timing changes.
- Fire and ice: A red and a blue planet take turns being the pivot, so the camera swings with every note.
- Walkable title map: The menu is a path too: you reach World 1, 2 or 3 by walking there in rhythm.
- Device calibration: A short test measures your screen and audio lag and ranks how steady you were before you play.
- Speed and swirl tiles: Snail and rabbit tiles change the tempo mid-level; swirl tiles reverse the orbit.
- Per-world stats: The game keeps attempts, wins and win rate for each world, and your highest level reached.

Pro tip: Before you blame a level, check the calibration. If every miss is late in the same way, press ] or [ a couple of times (or C to redo the test) — a small offset fix clears more tiles than practice does.
