Fireboy & Watergirl: Forest Temple is the first of the Fireboy and Watergirl puzzle platformers, and it is built around one idea: two characters, one keyboard, and a temple that only opens if both of them get through. Each level is a single screen of stone ledges, pools, levers and doors. Nothing scrolls and nothing chases you, so the challenge is pure planning and coordination.

It sits comfortably on a site about A Dance of Fire and Ice. That game is about timing and rhythm on your own; this one asks for the same calm precision, but split between two players or between your two hands. A level usually takes a minute or two, which makes it easy to fit in between longer sessions.

How to play

Fireboy moves with the arrow keys. Watergirl uses W, A and D: W to jump, A and D to walk left and right. Fireboy is the red character and Watergirl the blue one, and each can only exit through the door that matches their colour. A level ends when both are standing in front of their doors.

The hazards are colour-coded too. Water is harmless to Watergirl but deadly to Fireboy, lava does the opposite, and the green goo pools are deadly to both. Touching the wrong pool restarts the level. Red gems are for Fireboy and blue gems for Watergirl; collecting them is optional for finishing, but they count towards the rating you get at the end.

Later levels add buttons, levers, sliding platforms and pushable blocks. Many of these need one character to stay put, standing on a button or holding a door open, while the other crosses. That is where the teamwork comes in.

Tips

• Before moving, look at where each door is and which pools lie between the characters and their exits. Most levels have one obvious order of play.
• If one character is stuck holding a button, send the other ahead first, then bring the first through once the way is clear.
• Jumping over a pool is safer than walking along its edge. Give yourself a little extra room on landings.
• Playing alone, move one character at a time and park them somewhere safe before switching hands.
